  1. SCREENING
  2.  
  3. Reviewing sessions by more than 100 experts in various fields are held to
  4. insure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been
  5. placed in their proper fields such as rock, R&B, jazz, country, gospel, new age,
  6. rap, classical, Latin and so on.  The purpose of screening is not to
  7. make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make 
  8. sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.

  10. NOMINATING

  12. First round ballots with lists of eligible recordings in all fields 
  13. except those voted on by special nominating committees are sent to 
  14. voting members who return their ballots to the independent accounting 
  15. firm of Deloitte & Touche for tabulation.  To help insure the quality 
  16. of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their fields of 
  17. expertise, and to that end may nominate in the four general categories 
  18. (Record, Album, Song of the Year and Best New Artist) and in no more 
  19. than ten out of twenty-one fields on their ballots.

  21. SPECIALIZED NOMINATING COMMITTEES

  23. In crafts and other specialized categories, final nominations are 
  24. determined by national nominating committees of Academy's voting 
  25. members from the academy's seven chapters.
